What Happ Proxy Is and When to Use It Over VPN
Beyond its standard VPN tunnel, Happ can also run in a proxy mode built on Xray-core. Both modes share the same key, issued through the service Telegram bot, but they handle device traffic in different ways. Here's what separates proxy from VPN and when it's worth choosing — say, when you only want a game client or browser routed through the server, leaving everything else alone.
How VPN mode works in Happ
In VPN mode, the app builds a virtual network interface and routes all device traffic through it — browser, individual apps, and system services alike. It's the most predictable setup: nothing to configure per app, everything works as soon as the key is added.
What makes Proxy mode different
Proxy mode works differently: Happ spins up a local proxy server on Xray-core, and only the apps or browser configured to use it send traffic through that server. This is useful when you want to redirect one specific program — a game client or a browser, for instance — rather than routing the entire device through a system-wide VPN tunnel.
When proxy beats VPN
Happ Proxy mode is worth considering when:
- you only need a browser or one specific app routed through the server, not the whole device;
- a system-wide VPN conflicts with other installed software or network settings;
- you want tighter control over what goes through the server versus what stays on a direct connection, avoiding unnecessary overhead for everything else.
For similar per-app routing while staying inside VPN mode, check the split tunneling guide at /en/split-tunneling/.
What powers proxy mode
Both VPN and Proxy run on Xray-core and use the same key from the Happ Telegram bot — there's no separate encryption protocol to set up manually; the difference is purely in how traffic enters the tunnel. Full details are on /en/proxy/.
Turning Proxy mode on
Proxy mode is enabled directly in Happ's settings on the platform you're using, and desktop users also get a dedicated Happ Proxy Utility that simplifies integrating it with other software. The general connection walkthrough is on /en/setup/.
Frequently asked questions
What's the core difference between Proxy and VPN in Happ?
VPN routes all device traffic through a tunnel; Proxy only routes the apps or browser configured to use the local proxy.
Does Proxy mode need its own key?
No — it uses the same key as VPN mode, issued through the service Telegram bot.
Which platforms support Happ Proxy?
All of Happ's supported platforms, with an extra utility for desktop systems that simplifies setup.
VPN or Proxy — which should I pick if unsure?
Go with VPN for a simple whole-device connect-and-forget setup; pick Proxy when you need selective routing for one app, like a specific game.
